Recommendations

  • The road from Cusco to Hidroeléctrica can be demanding due to the altitude and sharp curves, so we suggest bringing motion sickness pills. Once you reach Hidroeléctrica, you can either walk to Machu Picchu Pueblo (approximately a 3-hour trek) or take the train, which departs daily at 2:30 PM and arrives around 3:15 PM. Train ticket prices range from USD 37 to USD 42.
  • If you decide to start walking without stopping for lunch, we recommend bringing plenty of water and a snack. Along the way, you’ll find small shops where you can buy drinks, seasonal fruit, and other refreshments, thereby supporting the local economy.
  • For those opting for the 2-day bus tour to Machu Picchu, there’s no need to return to town after visiting the archaeological site. You can descend the mountain to Puente Ruinas and follow the same route you took the day before. In this case, it’s also important to carry an adequate supply of water and a light snack.
  • We suggest setting off on the return walk to Hidroeléctrica around 11:30 AM to allow enough time to rest and have lunch. However, if you’re too tired, you can take the train back at 1:30 PM (arriving at Hidroeléctrica at 2:15 PM), which costs about USD 37 to USD 42. Remember to arrive at the station at least one hour prior to departure.
  • High season (May–August) coincides with the dry season and is the busiest time, so we recommend booking Machu Picchu tours in advance if you plan to visit during these months, especially if you intend to climb Huayna Picchu or the Cave area. Low season (January–March) corresponds to the rainy season, when landslides, collapses, and rising rivers are more likely. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain ongoing communication with our guests to update them on the status of the Amazon route.
  • Finally, the most recommended visiting hours for Machu Picchu are the first two morning time slots on both routes of Circuit 2.

Other Tips

  • Luggage:
    • Important: you'll need to carry your belongings on the second day, when visiting Machu Picchu, as we won't be returning to the hotel in Aguas Calientes.
    • Don't bring luggage on the trip. The hike can get pretty heavy. If you need somewhere to leave your luggage in Cusco, you can do so at your hotel or at our office (No-cost).
    • Guests arriving in Cusco in the early morning and travelling to Machu Pichu the same day, can leave their luggage in our office (No-cost).
  • Documents:
    • Original passport with a minimum validity of 7 months.
    • Andean Migration Card (TAM) with entry stamp to Peru.
    • South American tourists can present a valid Identity Document.
  • Health:
    • Consult your doctor about medication for altitude sickness.
    • Personal medication: Pain relievers, band-aids, antiseptic, pills for altitude sickness.
  • Climate:
    • Layered clothing: To adapt to variable temperatures.
    • Waterproof or poncho: Especially from November to March (rainy season).
  • Accessories:
    • Hat or cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

    • Camera and spare batteries
    • Cash in Peruvian soles for additional expenses.
    • Bathing clothes, in case you visit the thermal baths.
    • Extra money.
